Can you imagine immigrant Eastern European Jews arriving in Toronto’s Junction neighborhood? They established Congregation Knesseth Israel in 1909. It became a cornerstone of their community.

The Congregation Knesseth Israel, also known as the Junction Shul, stands as a testament to their faith and resilience. It is located at 56 Maria Street. It is Toronto’s oldest surviving synagogue still in use.

Initially, services were held in a modest home at 303 Maria Street. But the growing Jewish population soon needed a larger space. In 1911, land was purchased for $520. Construction of the present-day synagogue started soon after.

The Junction Shul was designed by James A. Ellis. However, it was built with the labor and donations of its members. The dedication took place on September 8, 1912. Traditional Orthodox services began in 1913. The congregation didn’t draft its constitution until 1918.

The establishment of Congregation Knesseth Israel boosted Jewish migration to the Junction. By the 1920s, Maria Street was a hub for Jewish residents. Many worked in construction, demolition, or as artisans. Some found work at the Heintzman Piano factory. These cabinet-makers carved the synagogue’s interior details.

Mordecai Langner became the first full-time rabbi in 1924. He served until 1939. After his departure, services were led by a cantor or members themselves.

After World War Two, many Jewish families moved away from the Junction. Congregation Knesseth Israel faced financial difficulties. By the late 1950s, services were limited to the High Holidays.

The building has a simple red brick facade. Circular windows feature eighteen segments. These symbolize “chai”, the Hebrew word for life. Inside, the interior reflects an Eastern European style. A three-sided balcony forms the women’s gallery. The ark housing the Torah scrolls faces east.

Today, Congregation Knesseth Israel is cared for by descendants of its founders. The synagogue continues to host weddings, bar mitzvahs, and High Holiday services. In 1984, it was designated an Ontario Heritage site.

The synagogue stands as a reminder of the past. It tells a story of faith and community. Even now, it serves as a place of worship. It connects generations to their heritage.
