Why does this building matter? This is the Head of prison’s office. It plays a vital role in South Africa’s correctional system. The Head of prison’s office oversees the administration of prisons. It ensures the safe custody and rehabilitation of inmates.

The Department of Correctional Services runs prisons in South Africa. The department has six administrative regions. Each region has its own regional commissioner. Areas within these regions are headed by an area commissioner. The ministry employs about 34000 people. They manage 240 prisons.

These prisons hold nearly 156000 inmates as of August 2013. Prisons vary from minimum to super-maximum security. Some prisons house specific groups like women or children. Others have separate sections for each group. Since 2024 Pieter Groenewald has been the Minister of Correctional Services.

Commissioner Thobakgale has extensive public sector experience. He held senior management positions in various government departments. Before DCS he was Deputy Director-General for Small Harbours. He also managed State Coastal Properties Development and Special Projects.

Mr Thobakgale’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. He also has a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree. He holds post-graduate diplomas in fraud and corruption prevention. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Business Administration.
