Is this the famed summer retreat of the Rey family? This, my friends, is Villa Rey, a place steeped in history and whispering tales of centuries past. Villa Rey started its life in the late 1600s, a dream of the noble Turinetti di Priero family. They envisioned a luxurious residence here, amidst the rolling hills of Val San Martino. Their dreams were tragically interrupted by the turmoil of the Spanish War of Succession. Imagine, this very villa, once a symbol of opulence, became a strategic outpost for the French army against the valiant forces of Savoy. The unfinished Villa Rey, ravaged by war and burdened by debt, changed hands many times. Each owner dreamed of restoring it to its former glory, but none truly succeeded. Then, in 1872, a prominent textile entrepreneur and deputy, Cavalier Giacomo Rey, acquired the villa. It was the Rey family who finally gave Villa Rey its lasting name and transformed it into a summer haven. Picture their joy as children, grandchildren, and devoted staff filled the villa with laughter during those idyllic summer months. One particular summer, however, tells a different tale. In 1917, when the Spanish flu swept through Turin, Villa Rey became a sanctuary, its inhabitants forced into an extended stay until the autumn’s embrace. Today, Villa Rey stands as a testament to time’s passage, its walls echoing with the whispers of history. It serves as the headquarters for the Automotoclub Storico Italiano and the FIVA, preserving the legacy of automotive history.
