“A bridge with quite a story, wouldn’t you say?” Ponte Umberto Primo, a majestic bridge spanning the River Po, has seen its fair share of history. This bridge wasn’t always here. Its predecessor, the Ponte Maria Teresa, faced safety issues. After much debate, the city commissioned a new bridge, a sturdy structure with three arches. Designed by Vincenzo Micheli and Enrico Ristori, Ponte Umberto Primo was inaugurated in 1907 by King Victor Emmanuel III. Initially, critics found the bridge too simple. To address this, four impressive statues were added, depicting themes of valor, piety, art, and industry. These additions, crafted by sculptors Luigi Contratti and Cesare Reduzzi, added a new layer of grandeur to the bridge. Ponte Umberto Primo isn’t just a crossing; it represents Turin’s evolution and resilience.
