In 1982, a seed of an idea was planted within the Jewish community of Sydney. That seed would blossom into Emanuel School. Right here in Randwick, on grounds steeped in history, stands this independent, co-educational institution. Emanuel School first opened its doors to students in 1983 in Woollahra. The school quickly outgrew its initial location. In 1984, the current Randwick campus, a sprawling estate with a fascinating past, was purchased. The move was made possible by the generosity of Mr. Aron Kleinlehrer and the wider community. Emanuel School officially opened at this site in 1985. Just a year later, in 1986, Prime Minister Bob Hawke himself graced the grounds to officially dedicate the school. Emanuel School isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a living testament to the community’s vision. The campus buildings have been continuously redeveloped and expanded over the years to cater to the growing student body. From a new science building in 2011 with state-of-the-art labs to the 2015 building with its theatre and gym, Emanuel School demonstrates a commitment to providing modern facilities. Even the old high school art block found new life as kindergarten classrooms in 2016. This very site, before echoing with the laughter of children, served as a monastery, a seminary, and even a gentleman’s private residence. The original Aston Lodge, designed by renowned architect Edmund Blacket in the 1860s, still stands as the Saunders Administration Building. Imagine the stories these walls could tell! Before European settlement, local Aboriginal people frequented these grounds, fishing and engaging in cultural activities. Traces of their presence, rock engravings and middens, still whisper of a time long past. Then, in the mid-19th century, Captain Francis Marsh received a land grant in this area. Later, John Watkins purchased this specific plot. He commissioned Blacket to design Aston Lodge. From 1891, Aston Lodge began its life as a place of education. First, as a private boarding school, then as the first New South Wales campus for the Loreto Sisters. In 1901, the Little Sisters of the Poor acquired the property, establishing a novitiate and aged care facility. Finally, in 1984, the property began its newest chapter as Emanuel School. The legacy of those who came before, from the Aboriginal people to the Little Sisters of the Poor, is interwoven into the fabric of this place. Emanuel School, with its rich history and vibrant present, stands as a testament to the power of community, the importance of education, and the enduring spirit of this remarkable location.
