“Did you know Hasseludden once boasted a bustling inn?” I ask. The salty air whispers secrets from the Baltic Sea. This is Hasseludden a picturesque area in Nacka. It’s nestled between the water and Skarpnässkogen forest. We’re standing near the remains of the old Hasseludden inn. It thrived in the late 1700s. A popular spot for travelers and locals alike.

Hasseludden today is a mix of the old and the new. It holds several historically significant villas. These are known as “sommarnöjen”. These summer residences are characteristic of Stockholm’s archipelago. They feature large waterfront lots lush gardens. The architecture is richly adorned. Many have large verandas overlooking the water. These were once called “punschverandor”.

Among the well-preserved villas are Villa Alphyddan built in 1862. There is also Villa Gustafshäll built around 1865. It was commissioned as a summer home by city broker GT Flodman. Villa Folkvang stands out as a striking white jugend villa. Designed in 1901 by Folke Zetterwall it’s clearly visible from the waterway. Villa Hamndalen a well-preserved example of cottage style architecture was built in 1864. It’s adjacent to Villa Folkvang. A unique gem is Sommartorp. It’s an early example of a prefabricated summer house. Built in 1887 by P J Ekmans factories it was commissioned by poet and architect Albert Theodor Gellerstedt.

The old inn’s pier is still here. It’s now a landing stage. Regular boats connect Hasseludden to Stockholm City and other islands. Hasseludden also houses two spa and conference facilities. These are Skepparholmen and Yasuragi Hasseludden. They add a modern touch to this historic setting. Exclusive private homes complete the landscape of this beautiful area.
