Initially a humble grain barn it transformed into a private dwelling in the mid-1800s. Known then as Westbrooke its name changed to Genadendal in 1995. The Union Government acquired Genadendal in the early 1900s. It served as the Governor-General’s residence for a time. Later it became the official residence of the Prime Minister. In 1994 Nelson Mandela made a significant choice. He opted to live here instead of the main Groote Schuur manor house. This decision cemented Genadendal’s role as the presidential residence. It remained so ever since.
