Hozenji Temple is dedicated to Fudo-myoo. He is one of Buddhism’s five Wisdom Kings. The moss-covered Fudo-myoo statue is famous. Two other statues stand with him. They are called Kongaradoji and Seitakadoji.
This temple was built in 1637. It was during the Kanei period. That’s from 1624 to 1644. It began within a former graveyard. The temple grounds were once much larger. They later became an entertainment district.
In the 17th century, Hozenji hosted stage performances. Rakugo storytelling was also popular here. During World War II, air raids destroyed the main hall. Only the Fudo-myoo statue survived. The people of Osaka soon rebuilt the temple.
