Wow what a transformation This is Parque Villa-Lobos in São Paulo. Imagine this space before 1989. It wasn’t the green oasis you see today. Instead it was a dumping ground. A landfill to be precise. The western part held the CEAGESP’s rubbish. Eighty families scavenged there for food. The east side was piled high with dredged material from the Pinheiros River. The center? Just a massive construction debris dump.
Parque Villa-Lobos was born from this unlikely beginning. The idea was sparked by the centenary of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s birth in 1987. Two state decrees designated the area for a park focused on leisure culture and sport. The transformation was monumental. They removed eighty families. They cleared 500000 cubic meters of large debris. They moved two million cubic meters of earth. The Boaça river running through was channeled.
The park as you see it today is the work of architect Decio Tozzi. He envisioned a ‘music city’ a fitting tribute to the composer. But Parque Villa-Lobos is more than just music. It’s a sprawling 732000 square meters of green space. It has a cycle path a playground a musical island for shows and concerts. It boasts a 729 square-meter amphitheater. There are also 750 parking spaces.

The Ruth Cardoso Orchidarium opened in 2010 adding another layer to this vibrant space. A special highlight is the elevated walkway called the ‘Circuito das Árvores’ a unique way to experience the park’s lush canopy.
A recent addition is a cycle bridge connecting the park to the Pinheiros River cycle path. It also offers access to the Villa Lobos-Jaguaré station.
