Did you know that the cornerstone of Paróquia São Pancrácio was laid in 1953? This unassuming church in Interlagos Sao Paulo holds a fascinating history. Paróquia São Pancrácio wasn’t always the vibrant community hub it is today. Its story begins in 1949 a generous donation of land. The Companhia S/A Auto-Estradas gifted a substantial plot for the church’s construction. The Cardinal Archbishop of Sao Paulo at the time Dom Carlos Carmelo de Vasconcellos Motta played a key role. His cardinal’s title originated from the Basilica of Sao Pancrácio in Rome. This inspired the name of our very own Paróquia São Pancrácio.

Initially a small wooden chapel served the community. Mass was celebrated once a month. The grander plans for the church’s construction faced setbacks. The rapid growth of neighboring areas led to the establishment of other parishes. These other parishes drew larger congregations. Paróquia São Pancrácio became less central. It became dependent on a vicar from the Igreja Imaculada Conceição.

The turning point came in 1977. A dedicated group of Interlagos residents took matters into their own hands. They began fundraising for a new more substantial chapel. By 1981 with Father Antonio da Torre’s leadership they built a brick chapel. The construction took only three months. Father Antonio served as vicar coordinator from 1979 to 1985. The new chapel opened on September 20 1981.

A group of women further propelled the parish’s growth. They worked to support the less fortunate. They also raised funds to expand the facilities. This included a residence and a parish hall. This expansion was crucial in securing a resident priest for the parish. Their hard work culminated in 1996. Dom Fernando Antonio Figueiredo restored Paróquia São Pancrácio’s parish status. The community welcomed Padre Hewaldo Elielson de Souza.

This period saw a surge in development. New pastoral initiatives flourished. Parishioner involvement significantly increased. In 1999 the parish celebrated its golden jubilee. The parish hall opened. The chapel underwent an expansion also completed that year. The newly expanded facilities were inaugurated at Christmas 1999. The Bishop of the Diocese of Santo Amaro Dom Fernando Antonio Figueiredo attended. Many dignitaries and community members celebrated this milestone. In 2004 Padre Savério Licari took the helm of Paróquia São Pancrácio continuing its growth. This small church stands as a testament to community spirit and unwavering faith. It evolved from a humble wooden chapel into a vibrant center of worship. Today it’s a beloved place of reflection and community for the people of Interlagos.
