Baishoin Temple has a long history. A monk traveling from Kanagawa Prefecture noticed the area’s spring water in the Kamakura era. He thought it perfect for Shingon Esoteric Buddhist worship. So, he built a small thatched hut.
Centuries later, the hut was almost gone. A legend tells of a plum tree glittering nightly. People found a sacred image in the tree. This event marks the origin of Baishoin Temple.
Baishoin Temple is now famous for healing. The Buddha of Healing appeared here. He mysteriously cured a child’s eye problem. The temple now offers help for eye illnesses and raising children.
