Have you ever walked past a church and wondered what secrets it held? All Saints Church is one of Warsaw’s most prominent landmarks, standing proudly in the heart of the city, on Grzybowski Square. Built in 1883, the church is a true testament to the enduring spirit of the Polish people, having survived multiple wars and conflicts. This grand church was designed by Enrico Marconi, who drew inspiration from the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua, an existing Renaissance-style abbey. It stands tall and triumphant, its two bell towers reaching for the sky The history of All Saints Church is intricately interwoven with the fate of the Jewish community in Warsaw, particularly during World War II. While the church was originally intended to serve the growing population of the Grzybów neighborhood, fate took a tragic turn. The church found itself within the Warsaw Ghetto, a walled-off section of the city where Jewish people were confined by Nazi occupiers. Despite the horrors of the ghetto, All Saints Church became a beacon of hope for many Jewish Christians. One remarkable story centres on the parish priest, Fr. Monsignor Marceli Godlewski, who before the war was known to be anti-Semitic. However, Godlewski transformed during the war, becoming a champion for the Jewish people by sheltering and helping countless Jews to escape the ghetto. He even hid the famous physician, Dr. Ludwik Hirszfeld, and the Zamenhof family – known for developing Esperanto, an international language. The church served as a symbol of resilience for the community, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, faith and compassion can prevail. During the Warsaw Uprising, the church was heavily damaged by bombing and artillery. Thankfully, after the war, the Polish people rebuilt All Saints Church, making it a symbol of their determination to rebuild their city and country. Today, standing in front of All Saints Church, you can almost feel the weight of its history and the stories of those who found solace within its walls. It’s a reminder of the power of faith to bring hope and healing, even in the face of unimaginable adversity. While standing here in the shadow of this magnificent church, you can hardly imagine the hardship it has endured. The church’s resilience is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Polish people in a city where people have always had faith in the future.
