A stone frigate you say? HMCS York isn’t your typical warship. It stands proudly on the shores of Lake Ontario a testament to Canada’s naval history.

Established in 1942 HMCS York replaced the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve Half Company founded in 1923. This wasn’t just any naval base. During World War II it served as a vital recruiting depot for the British Commonwealth. Over 17000 personnel passed through its doors. Think of the stories these walls could tell. The hopes dreams and fears of young men and women answering the call to duty.

HMCS York bears the name of Toronto’s original name and the first British commercial vessel on Lake Ontario. It’s a fitting tribute. The ship’s badge a white rose of York is a symbol of this proud heritage.

While there are no naval ships here today HMCS York’s legacy lives on. It’s a bustling reserve unit. It houses approximately 300 sailors and officers. It serves as a recruitment center for the Canadian Naval Reserve. It’s a training ground for future generations of sailors.

HMCS York isn’t just about the past. It boasts a lively band. One of five in the Canadian Forces Naval Reserve. This band a mix of brass and reed instruments performs regularly for the community. The band was actually formed in 1939 a testament to the lasting presence of HMCS York in Toronto.

The current commanding officer Commander Paul Smith MSM CD leads a team of full-time and part-time naval personnel. HMCS York is more than just a building. It’s a community. It’s a living legacy of service sacrifice and pride. A true Toronto institution. It stands as a symbol of naval history and the ongoing spirit of the Canadian Armed Forces.
