“Ever wonder how many layers of history a single building can hold?” Today, we stand before Villa Padoan. It is a Venetian villa steeped in centuries of stories. This villa has witnessed noble families, periods of neglect and eventual restoration.

Villa Padoan stands in Marocco. It is at the southern edge of Mogliano Veneto. Villa Volpi sits close by. Villa Padoan is also known as Villa Tiepolo, Sanudo, Contarini, Padoan, and Zennaro. The villa’s story stretches back to the 13th century.

Originally, the land belonged to the Tiepolo family. The well-known Bajamonte Tiepolo retreated here in 1300. It was a self-imposed exile. The villa then took on a succession of owners.

By the mid-16th century, the Sanudo family acquired the property. Historical maps show a simple building. It included a farmhouse, an orchard, and service buildings. The Contarini family, possibly including Doge Alvise, took ownership in the next century. They shaped the villa’s current appearance around 1723. You can find this date in a mosaic on the central hall’s floor.

From the late 18th century onward, the villa passed through many hands. These families included the Bertoli, Mantovani, Bonaventura, Padoan, and Zennaro families. Despite being under ministerial protection since 1954, Villa Padoan faced challenges.

From 1963, it operated as a hotel. This led to significant alterations to both its interior and exterior. A concrete structure was added to the west side. The hotel closed a few years later. Later, restoration work aimed to restore its original appearance. An external staircase with steel supports remains a controversial element. Today, Villa Padoan houses a specialist clinic.

The building is easily visible from Terraglio. A small garden separates the east facade from the road. The unusually vertical facade stands out. Its design features a three-part structure. Openings are concentrated in the central section. S-shaped curves connect this section to lower side wings. These wings are defined by pilasters.

On the main floor, three arched windows each have a keystone mask. Each window has its own stone-railed terrace. This tripartition is interrupted at the attic level. Only two square windows flank a mirrored surface. The Contarini family crest is painted here. A tympanum crowns the whole structure.

The south wall features diamond-shaped decorations. These likely remain from the original construction. An Istrian stone well stands to the south. It is another ancient element. In the 18th century, a chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Neve was built north of the villa. It faced Terraglio but was demolished by the end of the century.

Villa Padoan stands as a testament to Venice’s layered past. Noble owners, architectural changes, and eventual restoration have all contributed to its story. Villa Padoan is not just a building. It is a chronicle etched in stone and mosaic.
