Carved dragons adorn temple roofs. They guard secrets and stories. Today we explore Zojoji Temple. This Jodo-shu Buddhist temple holds centuries of history. It stands as a testament to Tokyo’s resilience.

Zojoji Temple’s story begins in 1393. Abbot Yuyo Shoso converted it to the Jodo school. This marked a significant shift. It laid the foundation for its future prominence.

The Tokugawa clan deeply influenced Zojoji. Ieyasu moved the temple to its current location in 1590. Six Tokugawa shoguns are buried here. Their mausoleums once stood as national treasures. Unfortunately they were lost to World War II fires.

Imagine the temple at its peak. Over 120 buildings once graced these grounds. Sadly much was lost due to war and the decline of Buddhism. Reconstruction began after the war. The Daiden or Great Hall was rebuilt in 1974.

The Sangedatsumon gate is a survivor. Constructed in 1622 it is Tokyo’s oldest wooden building. This impressive structure stands 21 meters tall. Passing through this gate is said to free you. It frees you from greed hatred and foolishness. Inside you would find Gautama Buddha flanked by attendants. Statues of the Sixteen Arhats are also enshrined.

Note the Sentai Kosodate Jizo Garden. Rows of stone statues represent unborn children. Parents decorate them with clothing and toys. These gifts ensure safe passage to the afterlife. Stones are piled symbolizing eased journeys.

Zojoji remains active today. It serves as the main temple of Jodo shu. It functions as the central seminary for priests. Novices come here to learn.

Many events take place annually. Hatsumode marks New Year’s visits. The Kurohonzon Prayer Ceremony occurs multiple times. Setsubun Tsuina-shiki marks Nirvana Day. The temple also holds a Peace Prayer Ceremony and Bon Odori.

Zojoji has appeared in art. Kawase Hasui depicted it multiple times. Hiroshige featured it in his “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”.

Visiting Zojoji is free. However the Treasure Gallery museum has an entrance fee. It is 700 yen as of 2024. You can easily reach Zojoji. It is near several train stations. Hamamatsucho Daimon Onarimon and Shibakoen are all close. The temple grounds are wheelchair accessible. Enter from the side street for easier access. Zojoji Temple blends history spirituality and art. Take a moment to appreciate its enduring legacy.
