Skogsö kyrkogård in Saltsjöbaden is more than just a resting place. It’s a significant part of the community’s history. It opened in 1921. The cemetery’s chapel was built at the same time. Architect Erik Bülow Hübe designed both. The chapel is a striking structure. It’s built of stone with high arched windows. A green copper roof tops it all.

The chapel wasn’t always used for services. For fifty years it primarily served funerals. Then in 1991 a major renovation took place. Now the chapel hosts services baptisms weddings and other events. The interior boasts stunning artwork. Gunvor Westelius designed the altar the pulpit and the baptismal font. They were all installed in 1991. A large crucifix hangs over the altar. It’s carved wood by August Filip Pettersson. Even the floor tiles are unique. The chapel’s main floor is patterned brick. The entrance area has cut limestone tiles.

Outside stands the bell tower. It’s a simple wooden structure. It was built separately from the chapel. The original plan was to hang the bell in the chapel lantern. But this risked damaging the building.

Skogsö kyrkogård isn’t just about buildings. A memorial grove was added in 1972. It’s in the eastern part of the cemetery. The land itself is steeped in history. The area has ancient burial grounds. Skogsö’s location on a vital waterway is key. The peninsula was important for centuries. This is evident in the numerous historical sites nearby.
