Built in 1796 Simon’s Town Martello Tower stands proudly. It’s a testament to a time of strategic importance. The British built this tower. They wanted to protect Simon’s Bay. The bay was a vital anchorage for their ships. The tower’s design was inspired by a Corsican fortress. This fortress at Mortella Point had impressed the British. They’d witnessed its resilience during the French Revolutionary Wars. The name Martello is a misspelling of Mortella.

Simon’s Town Martello Tower is circular. Its walls are incredibly thick. This made it resistant to cannon fire. It stands approximately 8 meters high. Its base is about 13 meters across. Interestingly there is no evidence that it ever held the guns it was designed for. The British did however construct a nearby battery. This battery contained cannons to support the tower’s defenses.

The tower played a crucial role in navigation. It acted as a beacon for ships entering Simon’s Bay. Around 1843 it was whitewashed to improve its visibility. The Simon’s Town Martello Tower faced neglect over time. It fell into disrepair. However it was eventually restored. The Simon’s Town Historical Society led the restoration. They worked with the South African Navy. Today the tower houses a small museum. You can visit this museum to learn more about its fascinating past. It is a provincial heritage site a symbol of Simon’s Town’s rich history and its strategic significance in the past. Imagine the stories this tower could tell of sailors soldiers and the ebb and flow of history itself. It’s a piece of the past made accessible to us today.
