Three bells ring out a harmonious chime. That’s the sound of the Nathanaelkirche welcoming you. This isn’t just any church. This is the Nathanaelkirche in Cologne’s Bilderstöckchen district a testament to post-war reconstruction and modern church architecture.

Built in 1965 the Nathanaelkirche is a striking example of mid-century design. Architects Jurgen Hartmann and Hans Berger created this unique building. Its hexagonal shape is repeated in many of the community spaces. The church itself is the largest part. It offers seating for 300 worshippers.

Notice the striking glass facade. It towers above the red-brick community center. The center includes a daycare. A funnel-shaped plaza connects all the buildings. This plaza leads to the church entrance and a small vestibule. The design is thoughtful. It aims to create a sense of community.

Look at that campanile. That separate bell tower. It’s an unusual design element. It stands prominently at the Escher Strasse Parkgürtel intersection. This iconic concrete sculpture is breathtaking. Three legs support a wooden bell tower. One leg even forms a cross with the base.

The interior is simple. Large concrete walls dominate. A wooden ceiling softens the starkness. The altar is raised. It’s the focal point of the church. The altar and other furnishings were designed by artist Heinz Heiber. A delicate steel cross crowns the oxblood-red altar block.

To the side a colorful mural catches your eye. It’s called “Encounters”. It symbolizes human relationships and the connection with Jesus Christ. Behind the altar the windows are exceptional. A large square window is surrounded by twelve smaller ones. It represents the heavenly Jerusalem with its twelve gates and Jesus with his twelve apostles.

The Nathanaelkirche isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It’s a symbol of faith hope and the resilience of the Bilderstöckchen neighborhood. It’s a place where history and modern design blend seamlessly. It’s a place you will not soon forget. The three bells ring once again their sound lingering in the air. A perfect ending to our visit to the Nathanaelkirche.
