Whispers of faith echo around the Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria. This seemingly modern structure holds a story that intertwines with the very fabric of Torino’s Città Giardino neighborhood. In 1955, amidst the emerging cityscape, the parish of “SS. Nome della Beata Vergine Maria” took root. Its name, later refined to “SS. Nome di Maria” after the 1986 concordat, marked the beginning of a spiritual journey. The Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria started humbly, a combined hall and parish house, thanks to the generosity of its first parish priest, Don Carlo Levrino. Christmas 1957 saw the inauguration of this initial space. The church’s territory, carved from Santa Rita, encompassed a significant portion of Torino. The area included the railway, Corso Siracusa, Corso Orbassano, parts of Grugliasco, and the Lesna area up to Via Crea. As the neighborhood blossomed, so did the need for a larger spiritual home. The post-war housing boom brought new families, and the small Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria could no longer accommodate everyone. This growth led to the creation of four new churches: Ascensione in 1970, Pentecoste in 1972, Sant’Antonio di Padova in 1979, and Sant’Ignazio in 1984. In 1968, construction began on a new Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria. The design by engineers Ghiotti and Contini envisioned a tent-like structure, capable of holding 600 seated and almost 2000 standing worshippers. The striking design of exposed reinforced concrete and brick, with a central nave inclining towards the altar, cost 125 million lire. The new Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria was consecrated by Cardinal Pellegrino on September 10, 1972. Three couples, eager to begin their lives together in the new church, chose this very day for their weddings, even amidst the ongoing construction. Today, the Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria serves nearly 10,000 faithful. It is not just a center for spiritual activities like Eucharistic Adoration. It is also a meeting place, fostering connection and dialogue across generations. The church’s exterior has been further enhanced with a new fountain, paved square, flower beds, and wrought iron doors. Inside, new stained-glass windows by Costantino Ruggeri and various artworks, not only beautiful but also conducive to meditation, grace the space. The Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Nome di Maria stands as a testament to the evolving spiritual needs of a growing community. Its story is one of adaptation, expansion, and artistic expression.
