Have you ever walked through a place that whispered stories of centuries past? Welcome to Hermülheim a suburb of Hürth near Cologne. Right here before you lies a place where history unfolds like a captivating novel.

Hermülheim’s story begins long before its first documented mention in 943. Favorable soil and water conditions suggest pre-Christian settlement. The Romans left their undeniable mark. Archaeological finds confirm continuous settlement. A Roman-Frankish burial ground lies just beyond Luxemburger Straße. This road a former Roman road from Trier to Cologne ran near the original settlement. In 1912 seven Matronensteine were found there. These stones likely served as grave markers. They hint at a Matronenheiligtum a shrine dedicated to the Audrinehische Matronen. This shrine likely existed near the Eifel water pipeline beyond Bonnstraße. The stones were reused after the shrine’s abandonment. They now reside in Cologne’s Romano-Germanic Museum. The various Roman water pipelines southwest of Hermülheim were engineering marvels. They collected spring water from the northern Vorgebirge hills. The Duffesbach Hürth pipeline Burbach and Gleuel pipelines converged in the later Burgpark. Their channeling into an aqueduct to Cologne demonstrated remarkable Roman engineering skills.

Hermülheim’s name evolved over time. It derives from a mill site at the end of the Hürth valley. This site was near the Faulbroich a marshy area. A car repair shop stands there today. The name changed to Her(ren)mülheim after 1256. This happened when the Teutonic Order settled in Hermülheim’s former castle. The mill became the Herrenmühle one of sixteen mills in the Hürth area. A street still carries that name. Hermülheim’s center then lay on the Duffesbach. It was between the Herrenmühle and the castle. The area expanded slightly around the Scheteling a local landmark. The Teutonic Order’s rule lasted over 500 years. It ended with the arrival of French revolutionary troops in 1794. Under French rule Hermülheim belonged to the Mairie Hürth. It was part of the Canton Brühl in the Arrondissement de Cologne.

Industrialization transformed Hermülheim. Its development is inextricably linked to Hürth’s brown coal industry. Briquette factories stood at the edge of the Vorgebirge. They were near Alt-Hürth and Kendenich. They used the clay deposits under the brown coal. Hermülheim attracted factories supplying the brown coal industry. In 1851 the Hürth mayor Rosellen settled in Hermülheim. This was on Luxemburger Straße. The construction of the town hall there in 1888 marked the administration’s move. The town hall is now the Turkish Consulate General. Hermülheim lacked a true center for a long time. In 1831 Hermülheim had 488 inhabitants while Hürth had 881.

The Hermülheim you see today reflects layers of history and growth. From Roman water pipelines to the Teutonic Order’s castle. From industrial expansion to modern residential areas. This suburb has truly endured the test of time. Its present is a testament to its rich past. Take a moment to absorb the atmosphere. Remember the stories that are woven into this very ground.
