Feel the wind whisper secrets through the Wave Arbor. This isn’t just any sculpture. The Wave Arbor is a kinetic marvel in Long Bridge Park Arlington Virginia. Designed by Douglas Hollis it was installed in 2011.
Two structures make up the Wave Arbor. Each holds 22 wing-like elements. These move with the wind. Light filters through them creating dancing shadows below. At night lights at the wing tips show the wind’s dance.
The Wave Arbor is part of a larger story. Long Bridge Park itself opened in the fall of 2011. It’s a 38-acre space north of Crystal City. The park’s design involved many experts. Hughes Group Architects handled the architecture. Hargreaves Associates and LSG were responsible for landscape architecture. CH2M HILL took care of the remediation. They worked closely with Arlington County. The park’s creation took years of collaboration. The park even won an award. It was named the Best New Facility of 2012 by the Virginia Recreation and Park Society.
Hollis’s artistic touch extends beyond the Wave Arbor. In 2021 he also installed another artwork Sky Column. It’s located at the nearby Long Bridge Aquatics and Fitness Center.
