Established in 1966 Howard Community College stands proudly before you. This wasn’t just another college. It was a bold vision. Howard County Commissioners Charles E Miller J Hubert Black and David W Force authorized its creation. They envisioned a community college a place where learning would thrive. Their dream took shape on land once part of a prehistoric Native American settlement and later the Dieker farm. Imagine the change. The Bassler family’s historic farm gave way to this vibrant institution. The old farm buildings were demolished to make space for progress.

The college opened in 1970. Its first classes were held in the Learning Resources Center now the James Clark Jr Library Hall. Just ten full-time faculty members taught over 600 students. They offered nine credit programs. A modest beginning for what would become a significant educational hub. Alfred J Smith Jr the first president helped shape the early years of Howard Community College. His leadership set the tone. It guided the college towards its future.

Over the years Howard Community College expanded. New buildings rose. They included the Mary Ellen Duncan Hall the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall and the Kathleen Herrington Hall. A state-of-the-art Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center opened in 2006. It houses three performance venues. It also includes two art galleries and dance studios. It’s a testament to the college’s commitment to the arts.

The college also saw its fair share of challenges. President Smith faced scrutiny over accounting expenses in the 1970s. The institution however persevered. It continued to grow and flourish. In 2015 First Lady Michelle Obama visited the college. Her visit highlighted Howard Community College’s importance in the community. The college even earned the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2019. This was a major recognition for the institution.

Today Howard Community College continues its mission. It strives to inspire learning and lifelong achievement. It offers a wide range of programs. These include classes for credit non-credit courses and workforce development programs. It serves Howard County and beyond. It stands as a beacon of education and opportunity. The legacy of this community college is one of growth and perseverance. It’s a story of vision and success. A story that continues to unfold. You can get there from here. As the motto boldly proclaims. The possibilities are endless.
