Reflecting cherry blossoms like a mirror it stands. This is the Big Pond in Ueno Park. Welcome to a place where nature and history intertwine. The Big Pond has charmed visitors since the Edo period. It is located on the southwestern edge of Ueno Onshi Park. The pond has a circumference of approximately 2 km.
Long ago, the area around Ueno Park was the sea. Over time, sand, earth, and stones expanded the land. The Big Pond remained separated from the sea. It is said that the pond was formed between the Heian and Muromachi periods.
In 1625, when Toeizan Kan-eiji Temple was built, the Big Pond was likened to Lake Biwa. A small island reminiscent of Chikubu Island in Lake Biwa was built. It enshrines Benzaiten, the goddess of mercy. During the Edo period, lotus flowers and cherry trees were planted around the Big Pond.
In 1884, the Ueno Shinobazunoike Racecourse circled the pond. It became a glamorous venue during the Meiji era. After World War II, the pond was drained. It was turned into paddy fields due to food shortages. A proposal to reclaim the land for a baseball field was considered. However, in 1949, the decision was made to preserve the pond.
The pond is divided into three sections by walking paths. These are the Lotus Pond, the Boat Pond and the Cormorant Pond. You can enjoy strolling, picnicking, photography and bird-watching here.
In spring, cherry blossoms decorate the Big Pond. They reflect on the water’s surface like a pink dye. In summer, lotus flowers bloom. The Big Pond is one of the largest lotus spots in Tokyo. The lotus flowers are at their best from mid-July to mid-August. They bloom early in the morning and close around noon.
You can observe lotus flowers up close from the Lotus Observation Zone. This deck is tucked into the pond. Lotus leaves repel water. They have been used as plates and for wrapping glutinous rice since ancient times. After the lotus petals fall, lotus fruits appear. They look like beehives, called lotus stands.
Many wild birds visit the Big Pond. You might see pintails, spot-billed ducks or black-headed gulls. Kingfishers, bulbuls and common cormorants also appear. The birds are accustomed to people.
At the Boat Pond, you can rent a boat. There are rowboats, cycle boats and swan boats available. The swan boats are a popular choice. They create a relaxed atmosphere. Prices start at 500 yen for 30 minutes. Rowboats accommodate up to three adults. Cycle boats and swan boats fit two adults and one child.
The Big Pond has a rich history. It has transformed from a sea cove to rice paddies. Today, it is a preserved natural space in the city. Come and enjoy the beauty of the Big Pond. Whether you stroll, boat or watch birds, the Big Pond offers something for everyone.
