Sculpted in time, Ateliér Ladislava Šalouna stands as a testament to artistic vision. Here in Prague’s Vinohrady district, Šaloun designed this very studio after winning the competition for the Jan Hus monument. He needed a larger space than his previous studio on Wenceslas Square. The grand project demanded ample room. Construction took place between 1908 and 1910, culminating in its completion in 1911. Ateliér Ladislava Šalouna is a beautiful example of late Art Nouveau architecture. It shows elements of Symbolism. This blend reflects Šaloun’s unique artistic style. The main studio, where Šaloun meticulously crafted the Jan Hus monument, boasts diffused northern light and a raised entrance. A smaller space with a gallery for more intimate projects, a salon, and even living quarters for a caretaker were incorporated. There was even a basement area used for occult gatherings. The building harmonized with its freely designed garden. In the 1930s, a residential section designed by Šaloun and architect Josef Černý was added to the south. This extension provided modern comforts. It included a ground-floor villa featuring a circular workspace. Ateliér Ladislava Šalouna became a hub for Czech artists and intellectuals. Luminaries like Ema Destinnová, Alfons Mucha, and František Bílek graced its halls. Today, the renovated building continues its artistic legacy. It serves as a studio for visiting professors at the Academy of Fine Arts. The Slovak Room, designed by Dušan Jurkovič, remains a testament to the building’s rich past. It stands as a tangible link to a vibrant era of Czech art.
