Gazing up at the Bazylika pw. Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego, can you sense the echoes of history whispering through its grand columns? This magnificent basilica, located on Kawęczyńska Street in Praga-Północ, is much more than just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Warsaw. The story of the Bazylika pw. Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego begins in the early 20th century with Princess Maria Radziwiłłowa. She envisioned a grand church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a beacon of hope in a time of great change. With the blessing of Pope Pius X in 1904, construction began, based on designs by Łukasz Wolski. The Bazylika pw. Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego was intended to echo the grandeur of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome, but its design evolved into something uniquely its own. Construction was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I but resumed in 1919 under the guidance of architect Hugon Kuder. Kuder made some modifications to the original plans, refining the design and ensuring the basilica’s enduring beauty. The church officially became a parish in 1919, even before its completion. The future Pope Pius XI, then Achille Ratti, took a keen interest in the basilica’s progress. In 1923, he bestowed upon it the title of “minor basilica,” a significant honor. Later that year, the Bazylika pw. Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego was consecrated. Inside the basilica, twenty-four granite columns, originally intended for St. Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome but deemed too short, now support the nave. These columns, acquired by Princess Maria, add to the basilica’s grandeur and tell a tale of resourcefulness. The interior decorations are the work of several artists, including the Ołaminows, who painted the main nave, the ceiling images, and the poignant Stations of the Cross. The five-story bell tower, although designed before the war, was not completed until 1998-1999. It houses a bell cast in Gdańsk in the 18th century, a gift from Maria Radziwiłłowa. Remarkably, the Bazylika pw. Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego survived World War II relatively unscathed, a beacon of hope amidst the devastation. It stands today as a symbol of Warsaw’s resilience. Pope Pius XI once declared this basilica “the most beautiful church in Poland.” As you stand here, imagine the countless prayers whispered within these walls, the hopes and dreams carried on the scent of incense. The Bazylika pw. Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and a symbol of the heart of Warsaw.
