Before World War II the Experimental Model Basin was at the Washington Navy Yard. Then it moved to Carderock Maryland. This is where Carderock’s story truly begins. The Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center stands here. It’s a place where engineers design ships and test models. They use precisely built towing tanks and computer simulations. Think of the incredible precision involved.

The Carderock story is also one of vision. Admiral George W Melville championed an engine experiment station. This would power the 20th-century Navy. Researchers at the Engineering Experiment Station in Annapolis designed and tested engines and fuels. These powered the ships of World War I and II. In 1967 Annapolis and Carderock merged. Their work served the Navy during the Vietnam War.

Carderock’s history is a testament to innovation. Many experimental ideas were tried some were abandoned. Paths not taken were as crucial to progress as successes. The Carderock Division provides cradle-to-grave support. It supports surface and undersea platforms. The work covers a wide range of scientific areas. This includes improving the performance of ships submarines and unmanned vehicles. It also supports research for military logistics systems.

The Carderock facility is unique. Congress chartered it to support the maritime industry. The facility specializes in environmental quality systems hull forms and propulsors. Ship design integration signatures silencing systems structures and materials. It even handles susceptibility. Carderock is more than just a research facility. It’s a crucial component of the Navy’s Sea Systems Command.

Carderock’s story isn’t just about science and technology. It’s about people and institutional culture. It’s a place where vision is transformed into reality. It’s the place where innovation flows from cutting-edge science and technology into the Navy’s ships and submarines. The Carderock Division has remote sites across the United States. These concentrate on engineering testing and modeling. Approximately 3200 scientists engineers and support personnel work there. Their work spans over 40 disciplines. It ranges from fundamental science to applied and in-service engineering. The Carderock Division’s work continues to shape the future of naval technology. It’s a story of constant innovation and dedication to excellence.
