The sculptors Franz Seifert, Anton Hanak, and Mario Petrucci created the busts. Carl Wollek designed Hanusch’s bust. The Republic Monument was inaugurated on November 12, 1928. This marked the tenth anniversary of the First Republic. Karl Seitz, the socialist mayor, oversaw its construction.
The Republic Monument faced adversity. Conservative and fascist groups attacked it due to its clear ties to social democracy. In 1934, during the rise of the Austro-fascist regime, it was dismantled. However, the Republic Monument wasn’t destroyed. It was stored away.
In 1948, on the 30th anniversary of the Republic, it was rebuilt. The Republic Monument suffered damage in 1961 from an explosives attack. The motive remains unclear. Some suspect connections to the Liberation Committee South Tyrol.
