Ever hear a song played by 53 bronze giants? Here at the Netherlands Carillon, that’s exactly what you’ll experience. The Netherlands Carillon isn’t just a striking tower. It’s a symbol of gratitude, a testament to the enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the United States. Given as a thank you for the U.S.’s role in liberating the Netherlands in World War II and for post-war aid, the Netherlands Carillon stands tall and proud. This isn’t just any carillon. It’s a grand carillon, a title earned during its 2019-2021 renovation when three new bells were added. The 50 bells already here, ranging from a hefty 12,654 pounds to a mere 35, each bear emblems representing Dutch society and verses from Dutch poet Ben van Eysselsteijn. The three newest bells honor General George C. Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., and Eleanor Roosevelt, figures pivotal to both Dutch and American history. The tower itself is a modernist marvel of steel and bronze, designed by Joost W. C. Boks. Its interconnected lines and rectangles are a nod to Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian, a stark contrast to the classical architecture prevalent on the National Mall. Climb the stairs to the observation deck, 60 feet up, and then continue on a spiral staircase to a second observatory at 83 feet. From here, you’ll have breathtaking views of the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Potomac River. The Netherlands Carillon is more than just a musical instrument. It’s a living monument to freedom, friendship, and the enduring power of gratitude. Its melodies, played throughout the day and during special concerts, resonate with history and hope.
