St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School

Opened in 1983 with just 135 students, St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School started humbly. It began its journey in temporary portable classrooms and the former St. Bede Catholic School building. Imagine a bustling first day, with students navigating the makeshift campus and the excitement of a new school year mixing with the unfamiliar setting. St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School quickly outgrew its initial space. By the following year, the student body had doubled, and so too did the number of portables dotting the landscape. The portables became a defining characteristic of the school’s early years. They symbolized the growing community and the anticipation for a permanent home. The construction of the current building took six years. During this time, the St. John Paul II community, teachers and students alike, endured the constant changes and disruptions. Yet, this shared experience forged a strong bond. A spirit of resilience, humor, and mutual support flourished amidst the construction. Finally, in the spring of 1989, the circular building, enclosing a beautiful courtyard, was officially opened and blessed. It offered a stark contrast to the years of portables and construction. St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School boasts a range of facilities. These include a library, gymnasia, science labs, tech shops, art rooms, a drama room, and even a chapel funded by the students themselves. The school’s namesake, Pope John Paul II, was canonized in 2013. This event further solidified the school’s identity and mission, rooted in Catholic values and a commitment to academic excellence. The school continues to embrace its history of humble beginnings and its spirit of community.
