Originally built for the mesmerizing spectacle of Cirque du Soleil, the Maihama Amphitheater has a fascinating story to tell. Here in the heart of Tokyo Disney Resort, the Maihama Amphitheater stands as a testament to the power of transformation. This isn’t just a venue; it’s a phoenix, rising from the ashes of its former self. Once known as the Cirque du Soleil Theater Tokyo, the Maihama Amphitheater opened its doors in 2008. It was a unique partnership. Cirque du Soleil, Oriental Land Company (OLC), and Walt Disney Imagineering collaborated on this project. The building itself was a marvel, boasting a seating capacity of over 2,000 and featuring Cirque du Soleil’s signature “ZED” show. Sadly, the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 impacted attendance. The show closed at the end of that year. The theater sat quiet, the giant Cirque du Soleil logo on its exterior a stark reminder of what had been. But the story of the Maihama Amphitheater doesn’t end there. OLC, the operators of Tokyo Disney Resort, saw an opportunity for rebirth. They renovated the theater, removing the Cirque du Soleil branding. The Maihama Amphitheater was reborn on September 1, 2012. Today, this versatile venue hosts a wide array of events. From concerts by renowned artists like Ayumi Hamasaki and GLAY to family-friendly shows such as those performed by Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku and Sakura Gakuin, the Maihama Amphitheater truly offers something for everyone. The Maihama Amphitheater is more than just a stage. It’s a testament to resilience, a symbol of renewal, and a vibrant hub of entertainment in the heart of Tokyo Disney Resort.
