Whispers of ancient remedies echo through Souzenji Temple. This serene Buddhist temple in Hamura City Tokyo boasts a history as rich and layered as its surrounding landscape. Founded in 1615 Souzenji Temple’s very name hints at its unique past. Its mountain name initially Iyakushiyama meaning Medicine King Mountain reflects the temple’s close association with herbalists. This connection is solidified by the presence of an on-site herbalist clinic a structure with deep historical roots.

The Souzenji Temple herbalist clinic has a long and fascinating history. Built during the reign of Emperor Go-Toba it was later rebuilt during the Tensho era. This long history makes it one of the oldest buildings in Hamura City. The clinic’s origins are tied to a remarkable event. In 1583 a massive flood swept through the Tama River. A giant willow tree miraculously saved numerous lives. To commemorate this event the herbalists built a clinic using the remains of the willow tree. This single willow tree became the origin of the “One-Tree Hall” the temple’s herbalist clinic.

The clinic wasn’t always located where it stands today. Originally situated near the old Tamagawa River its location shifted to the present site in 1695. This relocation was necessitated by flooding and the opening of a new water channel along the Tama River. Despite these disruptions the building has survived countless fires. It stands as a testament to its enduring significance. The clinic serves as a powerful symbol of the temple’s resilience. It offers a tangible link to the community’s history.

The current building is a later reconstruction. It retains however characteristics of its Edo period construction. The original founder’s statue stands proudly within. A remarkable feature is the herbalist’s image. This is considered one of the oldest medical images in the region. Its preservation is significant for understanding the medical practices of the past. Sadly the original image was lost to time. A new one was meticulously recreated in 1954. This was done by local resident and sculptor Kioya Koyo. The unveiling ceremony was a huge success attracting many people including children.

Today Souzenji Temple continues to thrive as a community hub. It hosts a range of events throughout the year. These include calligraphy workshops lectures and spring cultural festivals. The temple’s annual herbalist festival is particularly notable. This event held every year on the first Sunday of October attracts numerous participants. So as you stand here before Souzenji Temple remember its rich history. Remember the lives touched by the healing arts and the enduring strength of its people. This is more than a temple. It is a living monument. It stands as a timeless testament to the spirit of community.
