Can you imagine a place that was once filled with the fervent prayers of nuns, the murmur of hymns, and the flicker of candlelight? Right before you stands the Ex chiesa Santa Caterina, a testament to the city’s rich history. This church was originally built by the Frati del Sacco, more familiarly known as the Order of Penitence of Jesus Christ. They began building in the early 13th century, but due to the suppression of their order in 1274, they were unable to complete it. The building passed through several hands until it was finally dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria by a group of Augustinian monks. It was a place of quiet contemplation and worship, with centuries of history and art within its walls. The church was adorned with exquisite artworks, including Tintoretto’s famous Life of Saint Catherine cycle, now part of the collections in the Palazzo Patriarcale. This church held an important place during the festivities of the Venetian Republic. On Saint Catherine’s feast day, the Doge of Venice himself would visit the church to celebrate the Festa dei Dotti. Even though a fire in 1977 destroyed much of the church’s original artwork and structure, its walls still whisper tales of the past. Today, the Ex chiesa Santa Caterina is part of the Liceo Marco Foscarini, a prestigious school, and is used as a grand hall for events and exhibitions. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of history. Try to picture the grand altar, the intricately carved ceiling, and the bustling life that once filled this space. Remember, even though the church looks different today, the stories and memories remain.
