Kerr Hall South. A place that evokes a mix of anticipation and dread for every Ryerson, now Toronto Metropolitan University student. Why dread? Because navigating Kerr Hall South, or KHS as it’s known, is a rite of passage. It’s a test of your navigational skills, your patience, and your ability to not burst into tears five minutes before class. Kerr Hall South is one of four buildings, along with Kerr Hall North, East, and West, that form a square around the tranquil Ryerson Community Park, also known as the Quad. Built in the 1960s by architect Burwell R. Coon, Kerr Hall South stands on the grounds of the former Toronto Normal School. The original façade of the Normal School is preserved on the south side of the Quad, a tangible link to the past. KHS isn’t just a maze of hallways and classrooms. It’s a living testament to the university’s growth and evolution. Originally, Kerr Hall South housed a boiler system in its basement, which heated the entire building. This system was decommissioned after the university switched to a more sustainable district energy source. The former boiler room then underwent a transformation. It became the home of a new chiller plant, completed in 2020. This chiller plant is essential for KHS and other university buildings, contributing to a cooling capacity of up to 2.9 million square feet. This new plant not only increases cooling capacity but also provides backup for the main chiller plant in the Library Building. This ensures that even during maintenance or repairs, the university’s cooling system remains operational. So, next time you find yourself wandering lost in Kerr Hall South, remember its story. Remember the transformation from boiler room to chiller plant. It’s a story of adaptation, innovation, and the university’s continuous effort to create a sustainable and comfortable environment for its students.
