Established in 1969, The Church of Christ in China Chuen Yuen College stands before you. It began with a vision to meet the growing need for school places. Reverend Peter Wong of The Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China spearheaded this initiative. He decided to build a new secondary school in Kwai Chung.

The cornerstone was laid on May 18 1969. Professor Yung Chi-tung of Chung Chi College presided over the ceremony. Regular classes started in September of the same year. The official dedication occurred on November 16 with Bishop Otto Nall.

Initially, Chuen Yuen College followed a standard Chinese curriculum. In 1972, it expanded to include English education. A university preparatory program and a math/science focus were added in 1973. By 1974, the school offered 24 classes forming a standard educational program.

The school’s history reflects Hong Kong’s evolving education policies. In 1976, responding to the government’s push for nine years of free education, Chuen Yuen College increased admissions. Special education classes were introduced in 1978. Government funding shifts in 1985 led to a reduction in special education enrollments. The school then focused on increasing ordinary class sizes.

Mr Cheung Wan Cha, the founding headmaster, retired in 1983. Mrs Yau Oi Naam succeeded him but left in 1992. Mrs Lei Sek Yuk Ru then took the helm. In 2001 Mr Wong Wai Yiu became the fourth headmaster. The current headmaster is Mr Ip Tin Yau.

The Church of Christ in China Chuen Yuen College provides a broad range of subjects. These include fine arts and graphic design plus music and home economics. Industrial arts, computer skills and physical education are also offered. Religion classes are also part of the curriculum. Recent additions include Mandarin language classes, business administration, accounting theory plus travel and tourism education. Communications studies are also provided.

The school operates under an administrative council. Special committees oversee education, instruction, extracurricular activities, religion, guidance counselling, citizenship and moral education. These committees work to improve standards in their respective areas. Other committees focus on information science, teacher training and parent support. An association for friends, parents and teachers was founded in 1994.

The emblem of The Church of Christ in China Chuen Yuen College carries rich symbolism. The shield is divided into quarters. An open Bible appears in the top left. The words “Jesus is the Christ” are written on it in Greek. A Nestorian cross, symbolizing Christians in the East, is in the top right. Three overlapping Cs, representing the Church of Christ in China, are in the bottom left. The school’s name appears in traditional Chinese seal format in the last quarter.

The school strives to create a harmonious learning environment. It emphasizes respect, appreciation, love and care. The Church of Christ in China Chuen Yuen College is dedicated to nurturing well-rounded individuals. Its motto is “Learn to discern and be perfect like God”.
