The Embassy of Qatar houses Qatar’s diplomatic mission to the United States. You will find it at 2555 M Street NW. That is on the western edge of the West End, near Georgetown. Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad Al Thani currently serves as the ambassador.
Until 2005, the embassy operated from an office building at 4200 Wisconsin Avenue N.W. For many years, its staff was small. It consisted of just two diplomats and a few staffers. Qatar’s growing prominence as a banking, business, and tourism hub necessitated a larger embassy. The growing strategic partnership with the U.S. also played a role. After all, large numbers of American forces are based in Qatar.
In 2001, Qatar purchased this building for $13.6 million. Before that, it housed law offices. The Georgetown Design Group was retained by the Qatari government to fully renovate the 80000-square-foot building. Mokhless Al-Hariri was the lead architect.
The renovation involved a complete overhaul of the building. It also required approvals from several U.S. governmental agencies. These included the Office of Foreign Missions and the United States Commission of Fine Arts. The District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs also had to approve it. As did the Advisory Neighborhood Commission. The Embassy of Qatar moved here in early 2005.
According to architect Mokhless Al-Hariri, the design reflects Qatar’s growth and its expanding diplomatic and economic role. The exteriors incorporate Arabic design motifs. These express Qatar’s cultural heritage. The interiors feature office suites, conference rooms, and special-event spaces. They also have highly customized finishes. Additional design input came from Maria Midani and Barbara Mullnex.
Qatar and the United States formed diplomatic relations in 1972. Since then, bilateral relations have grown. Qatar maintains this embassy in Washington, D.C. The U.S. has an embassy in Doha.
