How many buildings do you know that have been destroyed and rebuilt? The Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo has risen from the ashes. It stands as a symbol of resilience. This church has a rich history and a promising future.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo is a vital part of the Lutheran community. It is near Largo do Paiçandu in São Paulo’s historic center. The church was founded on Christmas Day in 1908. It quickly became a central meeting point for the German community during the early 20th century.
Initially, it was known as Stadtkirche. That is German for City Church. Later, it was called Mother Church. In 1991, it was officially named Martin Luther Church. This Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo is the first Lutheran parish in São Paulo. It also holds the distinction of being the first neo-Gothic temple in the city.
The Lutheran community in São Paulo organized in the 1800s. They lacked pastors initially. They faced challenges under the Catholic regime. On December 26, 1858, the first meeting occurred. It was held at the drugstore Ao Veado d’Ouro. Services were in German. Pastors from Rio Claro and Campinas attended until 1871. Then, Pastor Emil Bamberg founded the first Evangelical Lutheran community. It was called Egreja Evangélica Alleman.
After the Proclamation of the Republic of Brazil in 1889, the community gained religious freedom. In 1891, Pastor Emil Bamberg organized the community with 80 families. The statutes were registered in 1907. While raising funds for their temple, services were in a Presbyterian Church.
In 1906, brothers Daniel and Hermann Heydenreich donated land. The land was on the current Rio Branco Avenue. Construction finished on November 28, 1909. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo was a place of worship even before it was completed.
The pastoral house was inaugurated in August 1908. Four months later, the Martin Luther church opened. The Christmas celebration saw carols sung by a choir. About five hundred people attended. Bells donated by the Heydenreich brothers rang out. Pastors from Rio de Janeiro, Campinas and other cities attended the celebration.
During World War I, the German community faced challenges. Brazil broke ties with Germany in 1917. Celebrations for the Protestant Reformation’s 400th anniversary were banned. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo faced financial struggles.
World War II brought new issues. Brazil broke relations with Germany again. In 1943, troops were sent against the Axis powers. Services could no longer be in German. The shift to Portuguese integrated the community with Brazilians.
Architect Guilherme von Effe designed the Martin Luther Church. He also designed the São Paulo Conservatory of Dramatic and Musical Conservatory. This was completed in 1907.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo stands on just over 1012 square meters. Its ground floor covers 465 square meters. It features a central tower on the main facade. A wooden door provides access.
Between 2012 and 2013, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo underwent internal reforms. The goal was to restore its original features. Lack of funds prevented exterior restoration. The church sought support but did not get it.
An organ with 12 registries and 620 pipes was inaugurated in 1909. It was built by Walcker House. It was updated in 1956. It then had over 1090 pipes. Further work in 1995 brought it to 1146 pipes.
The Martin Luther Church features stained glass. Casa Conrado created them. Conrado Sorgenicht also made stained glass for the Market and Municipal Theater of São Paulo. The stained glass shows the Luther Seal and gospel passages.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo symbolized the German community’s settlement. It united Lutherans in the city. Despite difficulties, it remained a reference point for Lutheran evangelicals.
The Municipal Council protected the Evangelical Lutheran Church of S\u00e3o Paulo in 1992. The Council for the Defense of Historical Heritage followed in 2012. It requires full preservation.
Today, the Martin Luther Church faces challenges. Tall buildings surround it. Homeless people occupy some. It suffers from external damage. The congregation has shrunk. Many evangelical churches contribute to this.
The church offers a Friday snack for street dwellers. They can register and store documents there.
A fire in a nearby building caused a collapse on May 1, 2018. This damaged the church. It destroyed stained glass and historical items.
The Lutheran Church spent over R$4.2 million to rebuild. Reconstruction began in 2019. A damaged German pipe organ was repaired. The rebuilt was finished in 2021.
