“Eastern Temple Village East” translates Ozenjihigashi. It’s a place that has likely seen many changes. But perhaps not as many as the capital itself.

Today we are standing in Ozenjihigashi. This area is part of the vibrant tapestry of Tokyo. Tokyo is one of the world’s most populous urban areas. It holds over 14 million residents. Greater Tokyo boasts an impressive 41 million people.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Tokyo’s vast history. Once known as Edo it was a small fishing village. In 1603 Edo became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate. By the 18th century Edo was one of the largest cities. It rivaled London in size.

The Meiji Restoration in 1868 marked a huge turning point. The imperial capital moved from Kyoto to Edo. The city was then renamed Tokyo meaning Eastern Capital.

Unfortunately much of Tokyo was damaged in 1923. The Great Kanto earthquake devastated the area. Allied bombing raids during World War II further destroyed it. Yet, from the late 1940s Tokyo saw rapid reconstruction. This fueled Japan’s economic miracle.

As you explore Ozenjihigashi remember Tokyo’s resilience. The city has overcome immense destruction. It has risen to become a global center of innovation and culture.

Did you know Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympics twice? It was the first Asian city to do so. The games were held in 1964 and then again in 2021. Tokyo is a major hub for research and development too. It is an academic center. The University of Tokyo is the top-ranking university in Japan.

Getting around Tokyo is an experience. Shinjuku Station handles over 2.7 million passengers daily. This makes it the busiest train station in the world. The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line is the oldest underground metro line in the Asia-Pacific region. It opened in 1927.

Tokyo’s economy is enormous. Its gross domestic product was US1.04 trillion in 2021. That’s 20.7% of Japan’s total economic output. The Greater Tokyo Area has the second-largest metropolitan economy in the world. It comes second only to New York.

Tokyo’s culinary scene is world-renowned too. It has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants globally.

Also foreign tourists can enjoy tax-free shopping. Just spend over 5000 yen at licensed stores and show your passport.

Vending machines are everywhere. Tokyo is the vending machine capital of the world with over 5.5 million. You can buy almost anything from drinks to fresh eggs.

As you leave Ozenjihigashi reflect on Tokyo’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. The blue anti-suicide lights in the metro stations show a commitment to mental health. Passenger arrangement staff gently push commuters onto crowded trains. This ensures efficiency despite the city’s density. Tokyo is truly a city of contrasts. It is a place where the past and the future coexist.
