In 1933, Ichikawa City established Mama Shogakko. It initially served as a second school building for Ichikawa Island Normal Higher Elementary School. Now, as we stand before Ichikawa City Mamashi Elementary School, imagine those early days. The year is 1934. The school, then known as Ichikawa Island Normal Higher Elementary School Second School Building, has just opened its doors. Children filled the classrooms, eager to learn. Fast forward to 1946, the school was renamed Mamashi Elementary School. A school song, echoing through the halls, was established in 1949. The school became independent from Kokufu Dai Elementary School in 1952. A new, three-story steel-reinforced school building was completed in 1970. Just recently, in November 2024, Mamashi Elementary School celebrated its 90th anniversary. Today, located in a quiet residential area about a 10-minute walk from Keisei Ichikawa-Mama Station, this mid-sized school thrives with around 581 children. They’re divided into eighteen 3-grade classes, plus two special needs classes. The school is deeply connected to the local community. The “Yutoroge Consultation Room,” housed within the school, serves as a valuable resource for the social welfare council. It’s a place where children can talk with counselors and play together. The school also participates in local events. The children even performed a song about the Mamasa Handcart at a local festival. This handcart, a significant historical artifact, rests near the school, reminding everyone of the area’s rich past. This deep connection between the school and the community makes Ichikawa City Mamashi Elementary School more than just a place of learning. It’s a vital part of the fabric of Mamashi.
