High above Kensington Maryland the Washington DC Temple stands. Its six golden spires pierce the sky a beacon visible from the Capital Beltway.

This magnificent structure is more than just a building. It is the 16th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It holds a significant place in the church’s history. The Washington DC Temple was the first temple built east of the Mississippi River since the Nauvoo Temple in 1846.

Imagine the groundbreaking ceremony in 1968. Church president David O McKay announced the temple’s construction. Local church members and community leaders gathered. Land clearing began in 1971. The 57-acre site boasts a rich history. Native Americans once inhabited the land. It even has connections to King James I and the Civil War. Before becoming a temple the land was almost a shopping center. Remarkably a connection between church representatives and Jewish owners led to a discounted sale. Their shared respect for religious history sealed the deal.

The temple’s construction was a massive undertaking. It cost $15 million in 1974 about $147 million today. Over 750000 people toured the temple before its dedication. That set a record for a temple open house. The dedication was performed by church president Spencer W Kimball.

The Washington DC Temple’s design is a beautiful blend of styles. It combines mid-century modern elements with traditional temple architecture. The three eastern spires represent the Melchizedek priesthood. The three western spires symbolize the Aaronic priesthood. The temple’s central eastern tower was once the tallest in the church. It features an 18-foot gilded statue of the angel Moroni.

Since 1978 the temple has hosted the annual Festival of Lights. Thousands attend to see the spectacular display. Foreign ambassadors even serve as guest speakers. The temple’s impact extends beyond its religious significance. It has become a beloved landmark. Local traffic reports often refer to it simply as “the temple”. The “Surrender Dorothy” graffiti on a nearby bridge became a local legend. It unexpectedly linked the temple to the fictional Emerald City.

The Washington DC Temple underwent extensive renovations from 2018 to 2022. The renovations updated mechanical systems and finishes. The artwork commissioned reflects the church’s global diversity. The rededication in 2022 was performed by church president Russell M Nelson. The temple remains a place of worship and spiritual ceremonies. It is however only accessible to church members with a current temple recommend.

The Washington DC Temple is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith community and history. Its impressive architecture and rich past make it a truly unforgettable landmark.
