Why is this hill called Pfaffenberg? Here on the Pfaffenberg, standing tall at 415 meters, we’re about to uncover the answer. The Pfaffenberg, sometimes called Pfaffenkogel, gets its name from the Old High German word “Pfaffe.” Meaning “priest,” this word hints at the hill’s early connection to the church. You see, the first mention of Pfaffenberg in 1340 places it within Obersievering. The document specifically notes its location “ze Obern Sufrigen an dem Pfaffenberge.” Even today, remnants of this religious past linger in the form of a former estate and tavern known as “Himmel” which translates to “Heaven.” This place, not to be confused with the Himmelhof in Ober Sankt Veit, speaks to a long history tied to the church. It’s thought that “Himmel” itself might be an old field name, indicating a vaulted area or a hilltop. So as we enjoy the stunning views from Pfaffenberg, let’s remember those early priests who walked this land centuries ago. They left their mark on this hill, a name whispered on the wind: Pfaffenberg.
