On this very spot in 1947 a new chapter began. This is Canaan Baptist Church. It all started on a New Year’s Sunday. About twenty Christians gathered at Rev and Mrs Mills’ home. They prayed and sang. Rev Mills gave a sermon. The gathering decided to meet again. They felt an unusual joy worshipping together. They needed a name. They prayed for guidance. Brother B Moses James received a revelation. The name Canaan was chosen. They sang I am bound for Canaan Land. Miss Vunella Armwood became the secretary.

Canaan Baptist Church was officially organized on February 4 1947. New Bethel Baptist Church hosted the event. Rev Mills preached a moving sermon. Four people were baptized. Seven people including those four formed the church. They selected Rev M Cecil Mills as their pastor. Bro Willie Armwood became the church clerk.

The church’s first business meeting was on March 25 1947. They worked hard to find a home. They raised money. On June 12 1947 they bought a building at 3124 Georgia Avenue NW. The congregation grew. They needed a bigger space. So on November 11 1956 they moved to 5714 Georgia Avenue NW. The church continued to grow. In 1963 they moved to their current location at 16th and Newton Streets NW.

Canaan Baptist Church has had several pastors. Rev Mills served until illness forced him to retire in 1971. Rev John M Alexander Jr served from 1973-1976. Rev Francis E Stewart served as acting pastor. Dr Cornelius Carter Jr was installed in 1977. He served for twenty-nine years. Dr Clark A Houston was the interim pastor. Rev Larry Owens Jr became the fourth pastor in 2009.

From its humble beginnings Canaan Baptist Church has strived to be a beacon of light. It has served the community for decades. The church continues to adapt and grow. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. This church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the power of faith. It’s a place of worship a place of community a place of hope. The legacy of Canaan Baptist Church continues to this day.
