Edifício Riachuelo

“A 1920s marvel. That’s the Edifício Riachuelo.” This stunning building stands proudly before you. Its neo-Gothic style is a testament to the city’s architectural ambition. Imagine São Paulo in the 1920s. The city was transforming. It was shedding its small-town skin. It was growing into a modern metropolis. Skyscrapers were just beginning to appear. The Edifício Riachuelo was one of the first apartment buildings in Latin America. Construction began in 1925. It was completed in 1929. Architects Samuel das Neves and Cristiano Stockler das Neves designed it. The building was commissioned by the wealthy Sousa Queiroz family. This powerful family owned vast tracts of land in São Paulo. They also built other impressive structures including the Edifício Sampaio Moreira. That building is considered São Paulo’s first skyscraper. The Riachuelo’s intricate exterior is beautifully detailed. Its design stood out in a city filled with buildings mainly for rent. The Edifício Riachuelo housed shops and services on the ground floor. A mosque occupies the first floor. The upper seven floors are private residences. Ironically enough some are now listed on Airbnb. In 1976 the building almost faced demolition. The São Paulo Metro’s construction was underway. Many historic buildings were demolished for the project. The Riachuelo was among the buildings slated for destruction. The city worried the construction would damage the Edifício Riachuelo’s structure. Then Mayor Olavo Setúbal intervened. He declared the building worthy of preservation. The Metro reinforced the building. The city spent 12.5 million cruzeiros. This was just one million more than the cost of expropriation. Today the Edifício Riachuelo is a protected landmark. It stands as a symbol of São Paulo’s enduring spirit. It’s a beautiful example of the city’s rich architectural history. A traditional rock music store Woodstock Rock Store calls this building home. It opened in 1978 and thrives among the apartments. The Edifício Riachuelo remains a testament to the city’s past. It’s also a vital part of its present.
