Founded on May 17 2007 Holy Ascension Orthodox Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. This parish in the Washington DC area serves the surrounding communities of Maryland and Virginia. It’s a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Its spiritual leader for many years was the Most Reverend Bishop Joseph.

Born Igor Hrebinka Bishop Joseph’s journey was remarkable. He received a Bachelor of Theology from Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville New York. He was ordained a deacon in 1967 and a priest in 1969. For 33 years he served as rector of St John of Kronstadt Church in Utica New York. There he helped build a new church and fostered a thriving parish life. His dedication led him to Virginia where he founded Holy Ascension.

In 2008 at the Vth All-Diaspora Council in Nanuet New York a pivotal moment occurred. The ROCA Synod of Bishops elected to elevate Father Igor to the episcopacy. He was tonsured and consecrated Bishop Joseph. The name honored the Holy New Martyr St Joseph of Petrograd. Bishop Joseph’s tireless service to the church spanned over 50 years. He passed away on September 18 2020 leaving a profound legacy.
