Between 1940 and 1945, this seemingly ordinary place became a gateway to unspeakable horrors. The Gedenken an NS-Deportationen Plaque serves as a stark reminder of the deportations that took place during the Nazi regime. More than 1,500 Sinti and Roma individuals were transported from here to concentration camps in 1940 and 1941. Starting in 1941, over 11,000 Jewish people were also deported from this location. The plaque’s inscription, “An | dieser Stelle | war der Aufgang zum | Bahnhof Deutz-Tief,” translates to “At this place | was the entrance to | Deutz-Tief station.” This simple phrase underscores the immense weight of history attached to this site. The plaque also commemorates the prisoners of the Messelager Deutz, who were brought through here. The NS Documentation Centre of the City of Cologne, housed in the former Gestapo headquarters, provides a comprehensive account of this dark period. The preserved prison cells within the EL-DE Haus, with their haunting inscriptions and drawings, bear witness to the suffering endured within those walls.
