A mere inch above the ground it rests. This unassuming stone is Tateishi-sama. We stand before it a tiny monument with a mighty history. For at least 600 years Tateishi-sama has been here in this Tokyo neighborhood. It’s the namesake of Tateishi a place blending old and new.

Tateishi-sama isn’t just any stone. Locals revere it as an embodiment of the Inari deity. Imagine the Edo period bustling life surrounding this small shrine. People worshipped this stone seeking blessings. It wasn’t always this low to the earth. Once Tateishi-sama stood much taller perhaps 60 centimeters high.

But over centuries floods and subsidence lowered it. And people chipped away pieces. They believed fragments offered protection against disease or even bullets in past wars. This act of faith sadly diminished the stone. Today only a small portion remains visible. Attempts to excavate the stone have failed. Workers fell ill. The bottom was never reached. Locals fear the consequences of disturbing it.

The stone’s very existence is a testament to time. The faith of locals shaped its present form. It stands as a silent observer of Tateishi’s transformation. From a place of small factories to a vibrant neighborhood. Tateishi-sama watches over it all.

Now look closely. You can still see the reverence. Small offerings like coins or food sometimes appear at its base. This tiny stone is a powerful symbol. It shows us the enduring connection between people and a place. A small stone with a very big story. Remember Tateishi-sama. Remember Tateishi.
