Established in 1971, the College of the Arts has grown from its origins as the State Conservatoire of Music. It has transformed into a multifaceted institution offering a diverse range of artistic disciplines.
Initially, it catered exclusively to classical music. However, the College of the Arts expanded its offerings. It now includes modern music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and media arts technology.
The College of the Arts plays a crucial role in arts education. It operates at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Furthermore, it extends its reach through 17 different centers across Namibia. This makes it the country’s most extensive arts education institution.
Imagine the bustling hallways filled with aspiring artists honing their craft. The College of the Arts provides diploma and certificate programs. A three-year Diploma in Performing Arts blends music, dance, and drama. Studies cover performance using Western, jazz/pop, and Namibian traditional instruments. Students also study ethnomusicology and arts administration. They also study music education.
The College of the Arts supports students of all ages. It welcomes young children and interested adults. The institution operates from several centers in Windhoek and regional towns. They provide after-school programs five days a week. The College of the Arts organizes programs for hearing-impaired and visually-impaired students.
