Justizanstalt Wien-Mittersteig is a special prison in Vienna’s 5th district. This prison houses inmates with mental abnormalities. These inmates are still considered responsible for their actions.
Construction occurred from 1908 to 1910. The building first served as the Margareten district court and jail. In 1963, after renovations, it reopened as a special prison. Since 1975, it has been a central institution. It houses mentally abnormal offenders who are still considered legally responsible.
The building’s design reflects a “Historical Homeland Style”. This makes it a unique piece of architecture. It is different from typical prison designs.
Let us talk about capacity. As of August 30, 2007, the prison was at 100% capacity. It held 152 people. Among them was one person awaiting trial. The prison also has an external branch in Floridsdorf. This branch is the largest of its kind in Austria. The main building can hold up to 95 offenders. The Floridsdorf branch can hold 57.
Since 1997, the Floridsdorf branch has housed something special. It is the central documentation center for sexual offenders. Since 2012, it also hosts the Clearingstelle. This institution is responsible for the execution of sentences. It also handles measures against sexual offenders across Austria. It creates and coordinates the execution plans for each inmate.
