Did you know St Leo’s Catholic College in Wahroonga boasts a fascinating history? It all began in 1956. The Congregation of Christian Brothers founded the school for boys on Sydney’s Upper North Shore. Initially it only had 118 students. They were in Years 3 to 6.
St Leo’s Catholic College quickly grew. In 1983 a significant change happened. The Christian Brothers could no longer staff the college. The Catholic Education Office Sydney took over its administration. This marked the appointment of the first lay Headmaster. A momentous year it was. The school also became co-educational that year. The first girls enrolled in Year 11. Year 7 girls joined in 1984. By 1987 full co-education was achieved. The college then fell under the Catholic Schools Office Broken Bay’s jurisdiction.
Throughout its history St Leo’s Catholic College has undergone impressive developments. In the 1980s a major building program took place. It included a multi-purpose hall. Art and hospitality facilities were also added. A new Technology Centre followed in 2002. This placed the college at the forefront of technological learning. In 2012 the Light of Christ Centre opened. It provides top quality sporting facilities.
A remarkable $25 million building program concluded in 2020. The result is the magnificent Mary MacKillop Centre. It houses creative and performing arts facilities. It also includes technology and hospitality areas. A dance and drama theatre is a key feature. Commercial kitchens and workshops are there too. An art gallery and visual art studios complete this impressive complex.
More than just buildings however St Leo’s Catholic College is a vibrant community. It has eight houses. Each is named after a saint or faith leader. Aquinas Bakhita Chanel Loyola McAuley MacKillop Teresa and Xavier are the house names. They represent school spirit and friendly competition.
The school’s patron saint is Leo the Great. He was an early Pope. He famously negotiated with Attila the Hun saving Rome. His courage and diplomacy are inspiring.
