Nestled at the corner of West and Fowler Streets in Falls Church, Saint James Cemetery holds a history older than the very church it serves. Saint James Cemetery predates St. James Mission itself, which was established in 1874. The cemetery’s story begins even earlier, with burials recorded as far back as the 1860s. Margaret I. Burke found her final rest here in 1866, followed by Bennett Carroll in 1868. Other names, like the Sewalls, are whispered among the stones, hinting at even earlier interments. In 1873, Sebilla Sewall sold the land for a mere dollar to the St. James Mission. A simple clapboard church was built, serving the community’s spiritual needs. Years passed, and the congregation grew. In 1902, a magnificent Gothic church replaced the older structure. The former church was then demolished. The remaining land was dedicated solely to the cemetery. Today, Saint James Cemetery holds the remains of over 600 souls, a testament to the passage of time and the enduring connection between the living and the departed. While the cemetery is no longer open for new plots, its history continues to unfold, a peaceful haven amidst the bustling city.
