“Ever wonder what it’s like to live in a district with a population of nearly 8,000?” Today, we’re exploring Hachimanyama. It is a district in Setagaya, Tokyo. Hachimanyama offers a unique glimpse into Tokyo’s residential side.

Hachimanyama is more than just a place on a map. It is a vibrant community with its own distinct character. The name Hachimanyama translates to “Eight Banners Mountain”.

Let’s talk about the local schools. Education is important here. The Setagaya Board of Education oversees the public schools. If you lived in 1-chome or parts of 2 and 3-chome, your kids would go to Hachimanyama Elementary School. Other parts of 2 and 3 chome are zoned to Roka Elementary School. For junior high, 1-chome and parts of 2-chome attend Midorigaoka Junior High School. Meanwhile, 3-chome and other parts of 2-chome are zoned to Roka Junior High School.

Did you know Hachimanyama has its own postal code? It is 156-0056. The area code is 03.

A little history for you. Hachimanyama Station opened in 1918. It was originally named Matsuzawa. The name changed to Hachimanyama Station in 1937. This station is on the Keio Line. Keio Corporation operates it. In 2016, over 42,000 passengers used the station daily. That is a lot of commuters.

The station has an elevated island platform. It serves two tracks. Passing trains use two outer tracks. Platform 1 is for trains to Chofu and Keio-Hachioji. It also serves the Keio Sagamihara Line for Hashimoto and the Keio Takao Line for Takaosanguchi. Platform 2 is for trains to Meidaimae, Sasazuka, and Shinjuku. It also connects to the Toei Shinjuku Line for Moto-Yawata.

Now, let us clear up a potential confusion. There is also Hachimanyama Castle in Omihachiman, Shiga. Toyotomi Hidetsugu built it in 1585. Today, it is in ruins. A ropeway connects the mountaintop to Himure Hachimangu. This castle was listed as one of the Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles in 2017.
